It’s quite something what a six-game winning streak can do for a team’s position on the Stanley Cup futures. Two Canadian clubs reeled off six wins in a row to start the month of December and it gave them both quite a boost on the futures at Bodog.
The oddsmakers at Bodog had all but written off the Edmonton Oilers, who only a week ago were +20000 longshots on the Stanley Cup futures. A six-game winning streak later and the Oilers have soared up the odds to +4000. Edmonton didn’t just beat scrub teams either, with wins over Dallas, Boston, San Jose and the Rangers.
The Calgary Flames have also won six straight and have gone from +6600 on the Stanley Cup odds to their current position at +4000. During the streak Johnny Gaudreau has been on fire with seven goals and 11 points in those six games.
The Oilers and Flames may be on the rise but the top Canadian team on the Cup futures is still the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs are listed at +1200 for the second week in a row, which puts them tied for fifth overall with the Rangers and behind Washington (+700), Dallas (+700), Los Angeles (+800) and Chicago (+900).
After Montreal the top Canadian team on the odds list is Ottawa at +3300. Vancouver is up slightly at +4000, while Winnipeg is holding steady at +5000. As usual Toronto remains near the bottom of the list at +15000.
One team that sank like a stone and can probably put away the Stanley Cup parade plans for another year are the Columbus Blue Jackets. Columbus lost goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to injury and sits dead last in the NHL with 25 points. It’s no wonder they dropped from +5000 to +15000 on the Stanley Cup odds.
