The Dallas Stars’ reign atop the Stanley Cup futures didn’t last very long. The Stars have already been knocked down to No. 2 on the list, as the Washington Capitals are the new favorite to claim the Cup at online sportsbook Bodog.
The Capitals rose up the odds list to +650 after holding at +1000 last week. Washington also took over first place in the Metropolitan Division following a five-game winning streak. During the streak the Caps outscored their opponents 21-10 with Alexander Ovechkin chipping in with three goals and a pair of assists.
The date the Caps should have circled on their calendars is Dec. 20. That’s the next time they face the New York Rangers, who have been their Achilles Heel for the last few seasons.
Dallas may not be the overall Stanley Cup favorite anymore, but they’re still close behind at +700 at Bodog. Right behind them are the aforementioned Rangers at +750, followed by Chicago at +900.
The Rangers have hit a little speed bump having lost their last three games while Chicago has made a small rise after sitting at +1200 a week ago. Chicago and Dallas fans get an early Christmas present when they square off on Dec. 22 to see who really is the best in the West.
Rounding out the Top 5 on the odds is Montreal at +1200. The Canadiens had been the Cup favorite for most of the season and they still lead the league with 39 points. However, they’re also going to be without Carey Price for at least the next six weeks.
After Montreal the top Canadian team on the Stanley Cup futures is Ottawa at +2800. For anyone who hasn’t been paying attention the Senators occupy a playoff spot right now and they’re the fourth highest scoring team in the league. That’s why they’re up from +4000 a week ago.
The rest of the Canadian clubs include Winnipeg and Vancouver at +5000, Calgary at +7500, and Edmonton and Toronto at +20,000.
